Westchester Man Survives After Tree Crashes On Car

BEDFORD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) --Westchester man survived a freak accident while driving to church.

Gerhard Hutter was on a wooded road along the Connecticut state line near Bedford when a massive tree came crashing down on his car on Saturday.

He said there was no bad weather and no warning.

"Everything crumbled around me, but then I really got scared cause I saw smoke coming from under the dashboard," Hutter said. "I thought, 'my God, now come the flames -- I'm going to burn in this thing now.'"

But amazingly, Hutter was able to crawl into the passenger seat and then climb out of his car. He suffered only cuts and bruises.

Experts say the tree fell because soaking rain likely weakened its root system.
