NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An atheist group wants to block the National September 11th Memorial and Museum from displaying the iconic World Trade Center cross.
The group American Atheists Inc. filed a lawsuit to block the display of the cross, saying that the cross-shaped steel beam would “impose religion through the power of the state.”READ MORE: Candidate Conversations: Jack Ciattarelli
The 9/11 Museum is fighting back, saying in court papers seeking to have the lawsuit tossed that they are an independent non-profit organization and not a government agency.READ MORE: Liberty Science Center Breaks Ground On $300 Million SciTech Scity Expansion
They also say the cross is an artifact, not a religious symbol.
