Maintenance Workers Find Human Remains Near LaGuardia Airport

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The medical examiner's office has confirmed that bone fragments discovered in a marshy area just outside LaGuardia Airport are human.

Maintenance workers found the skeletal remains on Monday while clearing debris and foliage at the water's edge at what is considered Rikers Island Channel, said Port Authority spokesman Al Della Fave.

"The remains were removed from the site and the medical examiner has confirmed that they are human in nature," Della Fave said. "We have not been given a sex, as of yet."

Detectives are reviewing missing person cases in an effort to identify the victim.

Sources tell CBS 2 investigators suspect the body may be a suicide that jumped from a bridge and floated into the channel.
