New App Offers Designated Drivers For Drunk Bergen County Residents

WYCKOFF, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Feeling a little tipsy and need a way to get you and your car home safely? There's an app for that.

It's called StearClear -- a new smart phone app that offers Bergen County residents designated drivers if they've had too much to drink.

If it sounds like a taxi service, StearClear CEO Craig Sher said it's actually much more.

"We send a team of two people in one car. One person drives our customer home in their own car while the other person follows to make sure they get home safely and then our drivers go on to the next job," he told 1010 WINS.

Sher said the app facilitates the whole thing from start to finish.

"Our customers enter in their credit card. Before they actually order their ride, we tell them how much it's going to cost them," he said. "We use GPS tracking to find where they are and they are able to see where their driver is all the time as well as their driver is driving towards them to pick them up."

The service costs $20 for the pick up plus another $2.50 a mile for the ride home. It may cost a little more than a cab, but Sher told 1010 WINS' Al Jones it has "the added convenience of having your car taken home with you."

"The great thing about our app is that we're using technology to solve a social problem," Michael Canger told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell. Canger runs the Bergen County franchise.

"People don't want to leave their car and people don't want to drive drunk but they also want to go out have a good time," Canger told Haskell.

Sher said more than 600 people have downloaded the app and registered for the service. The company is also in the process of franchising.

The free app is available for Android or iPhone.
