Local Leaders React To Fatal Shooting Near Empire State Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A deadly shooting near the Empire State Building has prompted some local leaders to call for stricter gun control laws.

At 9:03 a.m. Friday, police said 58-year-old Jeffrey Johnson shot and killed his former co-worker, setting off a showdown with police that left nine innocent bystanders injured, police said.

Johnson was shot and killed by police.

The incident, which comes less than two weeks after a knife-wielding man was shot dead by police in Times Square, is prompting reaction from local lawmakers:

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo

"Today's shooting near the Empire State Building is a tragedy for New York City and our entire state. My administration, including members of the State Police, is actively monitoring the situation and working closely with city law enforcement agencies to ensure that the safety of New Yorkers and those visiting New York City comes first. I commend members of the New York Police Department, as well as the first responders and civilians, who acted bravely and took swift action to save the lives of others and prevent this tragedy from becoming much worse. Our state has no tolerance for senseless acts of violence that harm our people, and we will do everything possible to ensure that law enforcement officials have the tools they need so residents of the city and tourists can enjoy everything New York City has to offer without fearing for their own safety and security. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I send my condolences to the friends and family of the innocent victim who died in this attack, and wish those who were injured in today's shooting a speedy recovery."

New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims of today's tragic shootings and their families. For those of us in government, and in law enforcement, the news of yet another mass shooting so close on the heels of the massacres at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin, and in Aurora, Colorado, should make it crystal clear that our current laws have failed to protect the public from gun violence. We must redouble our efforts to protect public safety so that New Yorkers don't have to live in fear of the next deadly attack."

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver:

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic events that unfolded this morning near the Empire State Building.
