As she crossed 6th Ave., she got caught in the rear wheels of the flatbed truck and dragged for two blocks, according to police.

Friends said the woman was active with the Our Lady Of Pompei Church Senior Center. They said they're shocked by the accident.

"My friend called me and told me and I went down and looked and I seen her flip flop there, one of her flip flops and her scooter and the bag," a man told WCBS 880's Monica Miller.

"She used to hug the trees, feed the birds. Sweet person, never argued with anybody," the man said.

Police said this was not a hit and run.

"The vehicle stayed at the scene when it was pointed out to the driver that, unfortunately, the woman's body was being dragged by the truck," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told Miller.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. No criminality is suspected but an investigation is ongoing.
