NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Add another to the Yankees’ MASH unit.
Mark Teixeira left New York’s 8-7 loss to Toronto with a left calf injury on Monday night, and was later diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain.READ MORE: New York Weather: CBS2’s 11/28 Sunday Morning Forecast
Teixeira, who missed five games in the past month with a sore left wrist, was sent to the hospital for an MRI that revealed the extent of his injury. Teixeira said he expects to miss at least a week, maybe two — the latest blow to the middle of New York’s power-packed batting order.
“We just have to take care of it,” said Teixeira. “If it’s a week, great. If it’s two weeks, not as great, but I’d still have plenty of season left.”
Teixeira came up hobbling after grounding a ball foul in the fourth inning. He was checked by a trainer and manager Joe Girardi, but initially stayed in the game.
The switch-hitting slugger drew a walk and went to second on Eric Chavez’s single. Russell Martin then smacked a single off starter Henderson Alvarez’s left shin and the ball caromed into shallow right field. Teixeira limped all the way home in obvious discomfort and headed for the clubhouse after returning to the dugout.READ MORE: Alec Burks, Evan Fournier Spark Knicks Past Hawks
“I knew something wasn’t right,” he said. “It was severe enough that I knew I needed to get out of the game.”
Teixeira’s injury is the latest blow to a Yankees team trying to hold on to the AL East lead. Alex Rodriguez has been sidelined since July 25 with a broken left hand but was cleared to take batting practice Tuesday. Starter Ivan Nova went on the disabled list last week with a shoulder issue.
And that’s just to name a few.
“We’ve been dealing with stuff like this all year,” said Nick Swisher, who also missed some time this season. “As bad as it is to say, I guess the show goes on, you know? Tex is one of those guys, he’s been huge for us in the clubhouse, on the field. So anytime you miss a guy like that, we’re going to have to do some work.”
