Dozens Trapped In Elevators After Power Outage At Co-Op City

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Power in Co-op City in the Bronx has been restored after an overnight outage left thousands in the dark and trapped more than two dozen people inside building elevators.

Co-op City runs its own power, but the generator shut down around midnight Thursday. Thirty-five buildings in the huge apartment complex were affected.

Firefighters hustled to free 27 people trapped inside elevators. Four were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

"It's hard for the elderly, especially for those who have oxygen and stuff like that cause there's no electricity for them," said resident Gary Hayes.

Con Edison stepped in to supply service and by 5 a.m., the electricity was back on.

Now, investigators are working to find out why the generator shut down and how to fix it.
