NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- An off-duty Newark police officer shot an armed suspect during a robbery at a restaurant early Tuesday, according to police .

The suspect entered the El Bachatipico Restaurant on Summer Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. and announced a robbery, police said.

The officer shot the suspect several times before he fled, police said. Officers located the suspect and took him to a hospital. His condition is not known.

"I am relieved that the officer and the other patrons and bystanders were unharmed and able to return home to their families safely," Police Director Samuel DeMaio said in statement. "Judging from the preliminary information gathered from the scene, it appears this officer exhibited extreme bravery and professionalism in warding off two armed suspects during a robbery attempt."

A second suspect remains at large. Police recovered two weapons at the scene.

The name of the officer has not been released.
