Occupy Wall Street Holding Demonstrations, Concerts Ahead Of One-Year Anniversary

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Monday will mark the one-year anniversary of the start of the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, but Occupy events have been taking place all weekend.

"You in New York are bringing money in from the rest of the world which was earned by exploiting hungry children," one protester in from Oakland, California told WCBS 880's Monica Miller.

Organizers are giving lectures to protesters in case there are run-ins with police.

"Our fear, our division is what keeps us complacent most of the time. It is their main weapon against us," the man told a group.

Organizers said Sunday's events focused on people power and the use of culturally creative tactics to build the movement. Occupier Peter Rugh told CBS 2's Drew Levinson that the movement has broadened its scope to focus on more than just the economy.

"We have shifted the conversation away from deficit reduction and onto poverty and onto health care and housing and onto the environment, stuff that really matters to the ninety-nine percent," he explained.

Among the events held on Sunday was "99 Revolutions," a concert featuring performances from former Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Das Racist.

Four-hundred people attended Sunday's concert, police were present with barricades in place for crowd control.

There are also planned marches and demonstrations in Foley Square and Thomas Paine Park, both in Lower Manhattan.

Organizers have also held an Occupy Rosh Hashanah Services demonstration for Sunday evening in Zuccotti Park.

The Jewish New Year begins at sundown.

Saturday's demonstrations led to several arrests, mostly for disorderly conduct. The NYPD has not announced the total number of arrests made.

Zuccotti Park was home base for the Occupy movement in New York for months. Members of the movement protest against the income gap in the country.

Demonstrators said this first year of the Occupy movement has been successful.

"The first thing that this year has changed is teaching people that you do have a voice," a protester named Evey told Miller.
