Four LIU Basketball Players Suspended, Charged With Assault After Brawl

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Four basketball players at Long Island University were arrested on charges of assault after a brawl with the track team.

The fight broke out during a welcome-back party for students at the Brooklyn campus on Saturday. Police say the four players were arrested Thursday after the track team members filed complaints. They were not seriously injured but were taken to a hospital.

Among those arrested include Julian Boyd, a forward who was named the Northeast Conference player of the year last year, and two high scorers, Jamal Olaswere, Troy Joseph and a fourth player, C.J. Garner. The team is ranked No. 1 in the conference.

"LIU Brooklyn has suspended indefinitely four members of its men's basketball team for their involvement in a Sept. 14 altercation on campus," athletic director John Suarez said in a statement. "No other student-athletes were implicated in this incident. Until all legal and appeals processes have been completed, we will not comment further on this matter."

It wasn't clear if the players had attorneys. They were awaiting arraignment.
