Homeless Man Arrested For Sexually Assaulting 21-Year-Old Woman In Hudson River Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - A homeless man has been arrested in a sexual assault in a waterside park in Lower Manhattan.

Police said the attack happened at 5:15 a.m. on Saturday in the downtown section of the Hudson River Park that stretches along Manhattan's West Side.

A 21-year-old woman said she was sitting on a bench when a man approached her. She told police that he hit her in the face, attempted to strangle her and then dragged her into the bushes where she was sexually assaulted.

The woman broke free and reported the assault to a Parks Department officer.

Based on her description, 25-year-old Jonathan Stewart was arrested on charges including rape and assault. Police said he is homeless. It was not known if he had an attorney.

The woman is hospitalized and in stable condition.
