NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A homeless man has been arrested in a sexual assault in a waterside park in Lower Manhattan.

A 21-year-old woman said she was sitting on a bench when a man approached her. She told police that he hit her in the face, attempted to strangle her and then dragged her into the bushes where she was sexually assaulted.

Based on her description, 25-year-old Jonathan Stewart was arrested on charges including rape and assault. Police said he is homeless. It was not known if he had an attorney.
The woman is hospitalized and in stable condition.
