Arrest Made In Fatal Shooting Inside Newark Restaurant

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An arrest was made following a deadly shooting Thursday morning inside a Newark restaurant.

Authorities announced that Mark S. Melvin, 32, of Newark was arrested and charged with the murder of 39-year-old Fuquan Mosely.

Officials said in addition to the fatality, three people were wounded, after Melvin allegedly walked into L.C.'s Place on 18th Avenue just after 10 a.m. and opened fire.

Authorities said it appeared the male victims were targeted by the shooter.

Police said witnesses told them the suspect drove off in a Dodge Magnum. Other officers saw a car fitting that description and pulled the driver over at Avon Avenue and South 18th Street.

Melvin got out of the car and ran, but officers chased after him and arrested him.

A second man was also arrested on outstanding unrelated warrants.

Three of the victims were taken to University Hospital, where a 42-year-old man remained in critical condition, police said.

"Nothing ever happens here. This is a quiet building. They cook nice food and everything," a neighbor told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

The woman said the usually quiet West Ward community was rocked by the gunfire Thursday morning.

"Boom boom boom boom boom, like firecrackers," she said.

The 81-year-old mother of the restaurant's owner was shot in the shoulder and was listed in stable condition. Her injury is considered non-life threatening, police said.

Melvin is being held on $1 million bail on charges of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses.
