Cyclist Runs 3 Red Lights In Brooklyn, Gets Hit With Fine Of Over $1,500

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A cyclist admits he ran three red lights in Brooklyn, but thinks the ticket for more than $1,500 he received is excessive, according to a published report.

Daniel Greer, 24, of Bushwick, admits he ran three red lights on his bike while wearing headphones on Sept. 7. Police pulled him over near Lorimer and Grand streets in Williamsburg, although he tells the newspaper he did not initially realize he was being curbed, according to the New York Daily News.

Greer decided to plead guilty to the citations against him, figuring the fines would be somewhere between $700 and $900, the Daily News reported.

But he ended up with a ticket for $1,555. Police say he was actually subjected to three different citations for each red light, and he was considered a repeat offender after running the first light, the Daily News reported.

The ticket amounts to about a tenth of Greer's annual income, the newspaper reported.

Greer tells the Daily News he considers the fine excessive, and had considered challenging the tickets. But he pleaded guilty because he was set to go out of town and had to respond to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles within a period of 15 days, the Daily News reported.

Police tell the newspaper Greer committed several violations and earned all the tickets and fines.

He had considered fighting the tickets but copped to the traffic violations partly because he was going to be out of town and and was required to respond to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles within 15 days.

Police said Greer earned the multiple tickets he received.
