Police: Newark High School Student Dead After Being Stabbed During Altercation

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Newark police said a city high school student has died of his injuries after being stabbed during an altercation near the school.

Authorities announced on Friday that 17-year-old Stanley Francois succumbed to his injuries on Oct. 10.

He was a junior at Barringer High School in Newark.

Police said that Francois was stabbed on Oct. 3 during an altercation with an unnamed juvenile in the vicinity of the school.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said Francois' death was classified as a homicide on Thursday, following the release of autopsy results.

Police have not released the name of the juvenile, who has been charged with murder.

The juvenile is currently being held in the Essex County Youth House.
