Woman Hit, Critically Wounded By Stray Bullet In New Jersey

PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island woman was hit and critically wounded by a stray bullet early Sunday, as she headed to a party in northern New Jersey.

The 20-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was in the vehicle with some friends when they heard gunfire. She then told her friends that she had been shot, police tell NorthJersey.com.

The woman and her friends, who had been looking for a site in Paterson where the party was being held, initially drove around 3 a.m. Sunday to a nearby medical office complex at 680 Broadway in Paterson, which they thought was a hospital, NorthJersey.com reported.

But they soon realized it was not, in fact, a hospital and called 911.

Authorities said the woman was hospitalized in critical condition, but further details on her condition and the shooting were not disclosed.

Paterson police Ceasefire Unit detectives were investigating Sunday, and anyone with information was asked to call (973) 321-1342, NorthJersey.com reported.
