Thompson Square's Romantic Pumpkin Proposal

Country duo Keifer and Shawna Thompson were a couple long before they joined forces to become Thompson Square. Struggling artists in Nashville, Keifer revealed to CBS Local how he popped the question to Shawna one October.

“We had gone to get a pumpkin to carve out for Halloween and I didn’t have any money at all when I asked Shawna to marry me,” he admitted. “I went out and picked out the ring I wanted to give her but I couldn’t afford a diamond so I had them cut a piece of glass the same shape the diamond was.”

Keifer had the plan in motion once he and Shawna brought home a pumpkin from the store.

“Shawna cleaned out the pumpkin because I don’t touch the gooey stuff,” he said. “I had put the ring at the bottom of the pumpkin and [when] she came back to put the candle in she pulled it out bawling.”

Keifer confessed he did get down on one knee and “did the whole knee stuff.” And, he had one more surprise up his sleeve.

“The week we got married I replaced [the glass] and said, ‘Let me get your ring cleaned, it’s so dirty!' I switched it to the actual diamond and she said, ‘Wow, it’s really clean now.’ It’s a bit cheesy, but it worked.”

Keifer and Shawna said they discovered from touring this year that fans like the slower, more intimate songs in their set.

“We kind of rejected that a little bit. We’re not the boring married couple that just sits around the house and do nothing,” Keifer said. “Everything was high energy, but we learned that our audience loves that and they also love the departure we’re able to do because there aren’t many married couple duos out there. Being able to sing more intimately and close we’re gonna embrace this on our next record. We’ll probably have three to four ballads because there’s only one ballad on our record now.”

Shawna agreed and said the album will be diversified.

“It’s all over the map, but it’s still Thompson Square,” Keifer explained. “We’re not changing the whole landscape of things, we’re just sprucing it up a little bit.”

Thompson Square's new single “If I Didn’t Have You” will be released October 30. The duo have also announced that they will join Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line on Luke's Dirt Road Diaries Tour beginning in January.
