Many New Jersey Schools Set To Reopen On Monday In Aftermath Of Storm

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — State education officials said students will be returning to classes Monday in many New Jersey schools that were shuttered by the superstorm.

But in the areas of the state that were hardest hit by the storm, school officials will likely wait until late Sunday afternoon or early evening to make their decision.

Many districts were closed all week because of the storm, which knocked out power and damaged buildings. Most have already decided to hold classes next Thursday and Friday, days previously reserved for the New Jersey Education Association's annual conference, which has been canceled because of the storm.

Districts that missed fewer days have more options for making up days, including shortening spring break.

252 out of 589 school districts have reopened, and Governor Chris Christie has urged districts to "be creative" and do anything they can to get students back to school -- including doubling up student bodies if necessary.

Christie commended the state's teachers' union for canceling a convention and reopening for two instructional days next week. And he said that the school year will not be shortened.

"We intend to stay committed to the 180-day instructional period," he said.
