NY Caterer To Serve Up Twinkie Stuffed Turkey

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It has been Twinkie-mania ever since Hostess announced it was going out of business, threatening a future without that beloved snack.

One restaurateur thought he'd want to say thanks for the classic treat, and what better day for it than Thanksgiving?

As the future of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread played out in a White Plains bankruptcy court Monday afternoon, one local Twinkie fan is using those cream-filled golden sponge cakes in a whole new way.

A Twinkie stuffed turkey will be unveiled Tuesday at Kennedy's Tavern on West 57th Street in Manhattan.

Caterer Butch Yamali said he's been serving Twinkie stuffed turkey for years as part of his family's secret family recipe.

"We take the turkey and we break up the Twinkie into our stuffing mix and we stuff the turkey with that and in the glaze, we use the cream filing of the Twinkie and we rub the outside of the turkey with it with some seasoning and some honey and we cook it," he told 1010 WINS.

Yamali said he'll serve up his special recipe to over 500 people at his restaurant in Baldwin.

"People are excited," he said. "They said they want to get their last shot at tasting a Twinkie."

On Friday, Hostess Brands Inc. decided it could no longer make it through a conventional Chapter 11 bankruptcy and instead, is now asking the court for permission to sell its assets and go out of business.

However a judge ordered Hostess to go into mediation with its second largest union in a bid to resolve their differences.

Several companies were expected to bid on the Hostess brands and assets.
