NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A suspect has been charged with beating his wife to death in Staten Island over what published reports said was infidelity.

Gregory Surinaga, 45, was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of his wife, Jodi Surinaga, 42. The couple lived in the 100 block of Beechwood Place in Castleton Corners, Staten Island.

Police responded to a 911 call just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, where they found Jodi Surinaga unconscious with trauma to her head.

SILive reported that Gregory Surinaga attacked his wife after finding out she had cheated on him. He first tried to choke her, then began beating her with a bat until she died, SILive reported.

Gregory Surinaga then swallowed several pills in an apparent attempt to commit suicide, SILive reported.

The couple's teenage children called police early Sunday upon finding their mother in a large pool of blood, SILive reported. When police arrived, they found Jodi Surinaga dead and her husband covered in her blood, the publication reported.

The couple had been married for 20 years.
