Giants Kickoff Returner David Wilson Named NFC Special Teams Player Of The Week

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Giants running back/kickoff returner David Wilson has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

The selection doesn't come as a surprise, as the Virginia Tech alum put on a spectacle for the MetLife Stadium crowd in the Giants' 52-27 thrashing of the Saints.

The 2012 first-round pick was brilliant from start to finish, returning four kickoffs for 227 yards, including a 97-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He also added 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His 327 all-purpose yards set a franchise record.

Not bad for a rookie who was once believed to be in head coach Tom Coughlin's doghouse. The 21-year-old has come a long way from his first NFL game, when he fumbled in the first quarter against the Cowboys and found himself on the bench after just two carries.

Fast forward 15 weeks and Wilson put together the most promising game of his young career.

He made history, too.

The five-foot-nine, 205-pounder became the first player in league history to amass at least 200 kickoff return yards and 100 rushing yards in the same game. He's also the fourth player ever to score two rushing touchdowns and return a kickoff for a touchdown in the same game.

"To come up and have a breakout game like this is an excellent feeling," Wilson said after the game. "You want to have a good game every game. I went out there, and my teammates went out there, and we played great and put up 50 points."

Wilson's 327 total yards broke the former franchise mark set by Domenik Hixon, who racked up 303 yards -- also against the Saints -- on October 18, 2009.

The rookie is the first Giants kick returner to be named Special Teams Player of the Week since David Meggett won the award in Week 1 of the 1994-'95 season.
