New Mets Prospect Syndergaard Apologizes For Using Gay Slur In Tweet
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Mets prospect Noah Syndergaard apologized Tuesday for a tweet containing a gay slur sent earlier this month.
The 20-year-old pitcher wrote "nice crocs f-- lol" in a reply to another Twitter user on Dec. 9, the New York Daily News reported, adding the tweet was later deleted.
"I had a little mishap on Twitter about a month ago, and it was just brought to the attention this morning," Syndergaard said during his introductory conference call with the New York media. "I'd just like to apologize for anything that was said. A buddy and I were having a little conversation. I had a poor attempt at humor and an even worse attempt at using a term I shouldn't have used. I hope I didn't offend anybody. I'm really sorry my first introduction to being a New York Met had to be like this."
Syndergaard was acquired from Toronto on Monday in a deal that sent NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey, Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas to the Blue Jays for highly touted catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud, catcher John Buck and 18-year-old outfielder Wuilmer Becerra.
Though not the centerpiece of New York's return -- that would be d'Arnaud -- the right-handed Syndergaard was listed as Toronto's top pitching prospect.
The Mets are "looking into the matter," the Daily News reported.
Syndergaard thanked the Blue Jays and expressed his excitement about joining the Mets organization in a series of tweets Monday.
Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire issued an apology in June after he tweeted the same slur in a heated direct message exchange on Twitter. He was fined $50,000 by the NBA.
In September, Yunel Escobar of the Blue Jays was suspended without pay for three games for playing with a homophobic slur written in Spanish on his eye-black.
