NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for two men who went missing after their canoe capsized in the Hudson River.
Coast Guard officials said its New York City sector was notified around 2 a.m. Friday that a canoe with three aboard overturned near the Rodgers Point Boat Club in Hyde Park, on the river’s east bank just north of Poughkeepsie.
Officials say one man was able to swim ashore to call for help but the other two are missing. Officials said the men were not wearing life jackets.
“We always urge people to wear life jackets, especially operating a canoe on the Hudson River,” said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Erik Swanson. “Those are very dangerous conditions and can catch anyone off guard.”
Swanson said Friday’s windy weather has also been a factor in their search and rescue efforts.
“The weather is challenging our air crews. They’re not able to fly in these types of conditions,” he said.
A command post has been set up at the boat club.
