Authorities: Child Stabbed In Newark Over Weekend Was Attacked By Mother

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Two stabbings that shocked Newark over the weekend have been tragically connected, police said.

An 8-year-old was found stabbed around 10 p.m. Saturday night outside the New Community Gardens apartment complex on Morris Avenue and South Orange Avenue.

The boy was rushed to University Hospital, directly across the street. He is still hospitalized.

Sunday morning, police found the body of a woman on Newton Street, a short distance away. She was also stabbed several times.

Authorities said Tuesday that while the "manner of death remains pending," they believe the woman's wounds were self-inflicted.

Prosecutors identified the woman as 26-year-old Othelia Johnson of Newark.

There's no word yet as to why Johnson apparently attacked her son.
