Malloy Forms Sandy Hook Advisory Commission To Explore Gun Policies

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Conn. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has formed an advisory commission that will review and recommend changes to state laws and policies in the wake of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Malloy announced Thursday he has appointed Hamden Mayor Scott Jackson to chair the panel. An initial report is due to Malloy by March 15, in time for the General Assembly to take action during the next session.

The group plans to examine gun laws, school safety measures, gun violence prevention and mental health services.

"Shortly after the initial horror and the immediate grief over what occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, there was one question on the lips of many of our residents: How do we make sure this never happens again? It's the right question, even as we recognize that despite our best efforts, bad things will happen," Malloy said. "I want the commission to have the ability to study every detail, so they can help craft meaningful legislative and policy changes."

Additional members of the commission will be announced later. Malloy said they will include experts in education, mental health, law enforcement and emergency response.

The governor said armed guards in schools will also be among the options considered by the commission.
