Jets' GM Search Enters Third Week; Trouble Filling Position?
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As teams around the NFL fill their vacancies, the Jets' search for a new general manager drags on.
But perhaps not for too much longer.
New York has had "follow-up conversations" with former Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo, according to the New York Daily News.
Jets assistant general manager Scott Cohen -- an internal candidate -- and Pittsburgh Steelers director of football and business administration Omar Khan have also made it to the follow-up stage, ESPN reported. It's unclear whether other candidates are still under consideration, according to multiple reports.
Jets owner Woody Johnson has made it clear that head coach Rex Ryan will be part of the package next season for Gang Green's new GM.
"They can't give the position away," FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported on "NFL Sunday." "They are now calling back candidates who have already turned them down, saying please reconsider. They're having a hard time finding that GM."
On Twitter, Glazer said Ryan wasn't the issue.
"Rex isn't what GM candidates are concerned with - their cap situation, personnel, QB and the circus turned a lot of candidates off," Glazer tweeted.
The team gave initial interviews to 10 candidates, the New York Post reported: Angelo, Khan, Cohen, Dave Caldwell, Tom Gamble, Marc Ross, Brian Gaine, John Idzik, Ted Sundquist, and an unidentified hopeful.
Caldwell landed in Jacksonville as the Jaguars' new general manager. According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Jets owner Woody Johnson was prepared to offer Caldwell a $1 million housing allowance.
Mike Tannenbaum was fired as general manager on Dec. 31, one day after the Jets wrapped up a tumultuous 6-10 season.
