Dick Codey Seriously Mulling Run For Governor Of New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - New Jersey St. Sen. Dick Codey has filled in as governor on multiple occasions, and is apparently now considering a run for the job.

Codey told WCBS 880 reporter Levon Putney on Wednesday that, right now, he's in the "Jerry Maguire" stage.

"And that's 'Show me the money.' We all know that Mr. Christie was able to raise significant money," Codey said.

Gov. Chris Christie is a big star in the Republican party with a profile that is still rising.

"And you can be sure that he wants to run very, very well so he sets himself up to run, in fact, for president," said Codey, a Democrat.

So, Codey, who served as acting governor when Gov. Jim McGreevey resigned and when Gov. Jon Corzine was injured in a car accident after not wearing a seat belt, is heading to the nation's capital next week to see if a few unions will give him national support.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only governor's races this year.

"So, there'll be a lot of money thrown in," Codey said.

Codey said he'll decide in two weeks whether to run.

He and his wife just started a foundation to help the mentally ill and he just bought a funeral home.

"All these things play into the equation of running," he said.
