NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The weather may have been bitterly cold Tuesday, but some people were still playing beach volleyball in the sand.

As 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon reported Tuesday, tucked into the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers is a sand volleyball court that is open year-round.

Group fitness director John Boyd said people are always excited to discover the little oasis in the dead of winter and take off their shoes.

“They’re definitely on sand, and it’s a great replication of when you’re on the beach, and it’s the only indoor sand court within New York City,” he said.

And Boyd said it’s not just a hobby for some.

“We have some open-level players, so they’re professional,” he said. “They actually compete around the world.”

But you don’t need any talent or coordination to run around in the sand with your friends. On weekends, the volleyball court is full of beach-craving New Yorkers looking to forget about the winter for a few hours.
