Woman Caught With Nearly 100 Pounds Of Pot In Nassau County

NORTH BELLMORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Nassau County found almost 100 pounds of marijuana in a woman's car, after they pulled her over for allegedly talking on her cell phone behind the wheel.

Mizzie Artis, 27, of Bellport, was spotted talking on her phone while driving, and not wearing a seat belt, around 6 p.m. Saturday on Columbus Avenue in North Bellmore, Nassau County police confirmed to 1010 WINS.

She stopped at Armand Street and met a man in a van, but the man drove off when police happened by, police said.

Afterward, Artis blew a stop sign and failed to signal her turn, prompting officers to pull her over. They found two large boxes in the car, and a K-9 search confirmed that they contained marijuana. Two other boxes in the trunk also contained marijuana, police said.

Artis was set to be arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead, on charges of criminal possession of marijuana, as well as numerous traffic citations, police said.
