Poll: 61 Percent Of NFL Players Disapprove Of Commissioner Roger Goodell

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- We all know that many fans have issues with the job that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is doing.

Unsurprisingly, some players feel the same way.

In fact, most of them do.

USA Today conducted a pull consisting of 300 active NFL players, and 61 percent of them said that they disapprove of Goodell as commissioner.

The commissioner addressed the results of the poll in a Q&A with fans on Reddit.com on Monday.

"I continually try to focus on issues that benefit the NFL in the long term, including, and most especially, our players," Goodell said. "I truly respect our players and get tremendous feedback from them. They help us make better decisions. I look forward to working more closely with them in the future.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was not shy about voicing his displeasure with Goodell, telling USA Today bluntly, "I think it's obvious that I disapprove."

It's easy to understand why Harrison doesn't exactly have a soft spot for Goodell, who took over for Paul Tagliabue on September 1, 2006. The five-time Pro Bowler has been fined over $100,000 in his career for violent hits.

"I feel like what he's doing is not totally for the safety of players," Harrison said. "... A lot of stuff they've done, (such as) fining guys crazy amounts of money for helmet-to-helmet hits and all that, and saying you're doing this for the safety of players. But yet you want to add extra games to the regular season. In the true interest of player safety, I would have no issue with it. But that's not what it's about. It's about money. Who hired Roger Goodell?"

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello echoed Goodell's sentiment from his Reddit.com statement when addressing the poll. Aiello told USA Today that  the commissioner "has tremendous respect for NFL players and always seeks their views," and "values their input tremendously in working to make the game better."

Goodell has come under fire recently for controversies related to replacement refs, bounty scandals and rule changes, among others.

Super Bowl XLVII will be broadcast on CBS, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
