Prosecutors: Correction Officer Pregnant With Convicted Cop Killer's Baby

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A prison guard is now facing charges following an alleged affair with a man convicted of killing two NYPD detectives.

Prosecutors said federal correction officer Nancy Gonzalez, 29, was arrested Tuesday morning at her home in Huntington, Long Island. Gonzalez is eight months pregnant with Ronell Wilson's baby, sources told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.

Gonzalez is accused of getting involved sexually with Wilson during her night shift at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Manhattan. Court documents indicate the tryst began in March of last year and continued until August.

During that time, inmates said they "witnessed hugging and kissing" between Gonzalez and the convict in an empty activity room next to Wilson's cell, CBS 2's Sean Hennessey reported.

The inmates also said they saw Wilson "with his pants down" in his cell while Gonzalez was there and that the guard "regularly flirted" with him.

As for how they got together, Gonzalez was recorded as saying she wanted to be loved and "kind of got sucked into his world."

Prosecutors said over the course of three weekends, Gonzalez and Wilson had intercourse with the "sole purpose of impregnating her." She became pregnant in June.

Gonzalez was also recorded as saying of her lover: "Why not give him a child as far as giving him some kind of hope?"

Gonzalez's attorney, however, denies the pregnancy was designed to help Wilson avoid death row. The lawyer said the former prison guard does have regrets -- both over losing her career and of having a child with a man convicted of killing two cops.

"I can't explain it. I know what's to come. I know what is going to be said about me," Gonzalez allegedly said. "I  know that for me as a parent, how am I going to explain this to this little boy?"

Wilson was convicted of murdering undercover detectives Rodney Andrews and James Nemorin on Staten Island in 2003. He was originally sentenced to death, but an appeals court overturned the death sentence for procedural reasons.

Wilson is facing another penalty phase trial, where a jury will again decide whether he should face death or spend life behind bars.

In addition, prosecutors allege that Gonzalez carried on another relationship with a different inmate, currently locked up in another prison, after breaking things off with Wilson.

Prosecutors claim that Gonzalez told the other prisoner "for whatever reason, I took a chance because I was so vulnerable and wanted to be loved and now I am carrying his child."

Meanwhile, court papers indicated that Gonzalez had poor self-esteem and felt vulnerable.

Gonzalez' next-door neighbor said it makes sense because over the years, based on their conversations, the correction officer indicated she didn't have much confidence.

"I remember her saying that she was fat. You know, like she felt inadequate. Which I was shocked because whenever I would see her, I was praising how beautiful she was because she is," that neighbor told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria.

Gonzalez faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with an inmate. She was released on $150,000 bond, which was posted by her sisters. As part of her release, she must undergo a psychological evaluation.
