Pizza Vendors Look Forward To Spike In Sales During Lent

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Lent has begun with Ash Wednesday, and pizza vendors have begun looking forward to rising sales – especially with toppings that omit meat.

"It's a noticeable difference, sure," said Frank Sabatino of Dunwoodie Pizzeria & Restaurant in Yonkers.

As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, Sabatino said it is not only more pizza, but regular customers ordering differently.

"They would, you know, get a slice or something that wouldn't contain something with meat," Sabatino said. "Eggplant sells more; stuff like that."

Up the street at Raceway Pizza, Luigi Petrozza said Lent does drive pizza sales, but there is another factor that would also help.

"If the economy improves a little bit, people can afford to buy some more pizza," he said.
