Judge Convicts Manhattan Lawyer Soma Sengupta Of Lying About Age

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A Manhattan attorney was convicted Friday of forgery.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said a tower of deception built up by Soma Sengupta finally fell in upon itself.

A decade of forgeries and conspiracies took her from a job at a DA's office 13 years ago and to London, where she was hired as a barrister, and even donned the traditional white wig.

Of all the forgeries of college and law school degrees and forged letters of reference from employers, it was a forged birth certificate that finally tripped her up.

She claimed to be 29, but she's a good 20 years older and somebody noticed.

Judge Thomas Farber in New York convicted her after a non jury trial saying he was struck by the sheer magnitude and intensity of her lies and schemes.

Sengupta faces seven years in prison and her boyfriend faces similar charges.
