Thieves Brazenly Steal $2 Million Worth Of Jewelry From Four Seasons Hotel
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Thieves pulled off a stunning jewelry heist this weekend at one of the city's most posh hotels.
As CBS 2's Steve Langford reported, the crooks weren't shy about carrying out the crime at the Four Seasons Hotel, 57 E. 57th St.
The hotel is a posh palace and a pricey one, where the Presidential Suites will set guests back $15,000 per night.
But now, the thieves have shattered the sense of security at the hotel, following the daring smash-and-grab around 2 a.m. Saturday in the middle of the hotel's spectacular lobby.
The three thieves walked right into the hotel, and one pulled a sledgehammer and smashed the Jacob & Co. case right next to the front desk. They made away with some very expensive jewelry.
The thieves then made a quick getaway with the stolen watches, necklace, earrings, cufflinks and pendants – with a total value reported at $2 million.
Police released surveillance images of two suspects Sunday night.
One is described as a black male standing 6 feet tall, last seen wearing a tan trenchcoat and carrying a hammer. The other is described as a male black standing 6 feet tall, last seen wearing gray pants and a blue jacket.
Police made no mention of a third suspect.
"It sounds like something out of 'Oceans 11' or something," one person remarked.
But the Four Seasons is not thinking about pop culture comparisons. A staffer at the front desk told CBS 2 the hotel has been working with police and has no comment.
"I heard there was a lack of security or the security cameras weren't working," another person remarked.
But there are other security cameras that might help the investigation, such as the one at the Jacob & Co. shop right across the street.
Reactions from the hotel guests to the high-priced hit ran the gamut.
"Unacceptable, unacceptable," a couple visiting from France said in French. "In a hotel of this category, this is not normal."
But another guest said, "We are happy with the security, thank you."
