Mets' Wright To PED Cheats: 'I Hope You Get Caught'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mets third baseman David Wright has a strong message for baseball players looking to gain an edge through performance-enhancing drugs.
"If you cheat, I hope you get caught," Wright told the New York Daily News on Wednesday.
Wright stood by his embattled agents, Seth and Sam Levinson, before re-signing with the Mets this offseason. The Brooklyn-based Levinsons were put under the microscope after another client, Melky Cabera, was suspended for PED use last season.
The Levinsons also have multiple clients -- Jesus Montero, Gio Gonzalez and Fernando Martinez among them -- reportedly named in the records of Biogenesis, the Florida clinic under investigation by MLB for allegedly doling out PEDs.
"I don't care if you're with the same agency I'm with or not," Wright, the Mets' clubhouse leader, told the Daily News. "If you're a cheater, I hope you get caught, and I hope you get punished."
His comments came the morning after Mets outfield prospect Cesar Puello -- another player represented by the Levinsons -- was linked to Biogenesis in an ESPN report. Puello essentially issued a no-comment from Mets camp Wednesday, referring questions to the players' association.
Wright hasn't been shy on the subject of baseball's biggest headache. After former Mets catcher and good pal Paul Lo Duca was named in the Mitchell Report, Wright said "whether it's my best friend in the game or whoever, that if they get caught, if they fail a drug test, if there's substantial evidence they used steroids, there should be a harsh penalty."
"He's a guy I'd go to battle for any day," Wright said of Lo Duca in Jan. 2008. "But when you're talking about steroids, you're talking about something that's illegal. No matter how close a friend, I can't condone steroids."
