Commack Man Faces DWI Charge After Crash Involving School Bus

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man faces DWI and other charges in connection with a crash involving a school bus Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 9:45 a.m. on Route 25A in Smithtown.

Police said 44-year-old Robert Slavonik of Commack was pulling out of a Dunkin' Donuts parking lot when his Dodge pickup truck struck the school bus.

Slavonik fled the scene but was later arrested after a witness reported the license plate number to police, authorities said. Slavonik was in the driver's seat of the truck in the driveway of his home when he was taken into custody, police said.

Slavonik is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated.

He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.

The bus, which was carrying 26 people -- including 23 children -- was from the Three Village School District.

No injuries were reported.
