Newark Man Gets 30 Years For Killing Man, Shooting At 2 Women

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 22-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday, in connection with the murder of another man in Newark.

Essex County Judge Verna G. Leath sentenced Maurice Mosley for the murder of Douglas Brown, 29, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.

Mosley shot and killed Brown on July 16, 2011, after ordering him out of a van along with two women, and robbing them all, near Orange and Gray streets in Newark, prosecutors said.

Brown was pronounced dead a few hours later at University Hospital in Newark, prosecutors said.

Mosley also fired his weapon at the two women, but both escaped injury.

After a six-day trial in October of last year, Mosley was convicted of one count each of murder and felony murder, two counts of attempted murder, three counts of robbery, and two weapons offenses.

Even given new eyewitness identification rules – in which jurors must be told an eyewitness identification can be diminished due to passage of time, stress, poor lighting and the person making the identification being of a different race than the suspect – the jury convicted Mosley easily, prosecutors said.

Mosley will serve his sentence in New Jersey State Prison.
