NYC Beaches To Open Memorial Day Weekend

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- City beaches are expected to be open in time for the Memorial Day weekend, but not everything ravaged by Sandy will be replaced by the unofficial start to the summer season.

The city is pouring $266 million to restore the beaches. The price tag for Rockaway Beach alone is $147 million.

Rockaway's three-mile boardwalk will not be replaced in time for the May 25 opening, but according to the Daily News, the city is building concrete "islands'' with bathrooms and food vendors.

The city also is putting up modular buildings on stilts in the sand to house bathrooms, lifeguard stations and maintenance buildings.

Other city beaches include Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, Orchard Beach and Staten Island's Wolfe's Pond, Cedar Grove and Midland and South beaches.
