Colleges On Long Island Pull In Record Donations

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It was a record year for donations at several colleges and universities on Long Island.

Five schools on Long Island received donations that either matched or exceeded their largest gifts ever, according to Newsday.

A gift of $150 million from a former hedge fund manager's foundation was given to Stony Brook University. The donation from Jim Simons and his alumna wife Marilyn was the largest gift to a Long Island college or university in 2012.

Pharmaceutical executive Maurice Deane gave Hofstra University its largest-ever gift with a donation of $20 million.

Adelphi University alum and financial executive Robert Willumstad made a $9.5 million donation to his alma mater. That matched the school's largest donation.

Donors also gave $1 million each to Farmingdale State College and Molloy College.
