NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — An NYPD officer stood charged with assault Monday, after allegedly punching his 3-year-old son in the face at their Nassau County home.

The boy suffered swelling and bruising to the right eye, cheek and nose after his father allegedly punched him Saturday afternoon.
Sharp was arraigned Sunday and released on a personal recognizance bond.

Sharp is an officer on the Brooklyn police gang unit, according to a Newsday report. Police officials he has been suspended without pay.
Sharp was scheduled to appear back in court on March 18.
