NYPD: Man Dies In Police Custody On Staten Island

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Staten Island man died while in police custody after he was arrested for violating an order of protection obtained by his ex-girlfriend, police said Friday.

Officers responded to a 911 call at Richmond Terrace on Staten Island Thursday evening from a 53-year-old woman who said her ex-boyfriend was banging on her door, police said.

When they arrived, police said they arrested 52-year-old Irving Mizell once they verified the order of protection was in place.

He was then taken to the 120th Precinct where he complained of having difficulty breathing, police said. EMS was called and Mizell was taken to Richmond University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
