11-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Sings At Carnegie Hall

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island youngster who beat cancer will now be singing at Carnegie Hall.

As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, Veronica Franco is an outgoing 11-year-old girl from Rocky Point, Suffolk County. But for over a year, she fought and won a battle against a rare cancer in her pelvic bone area.

"I'm glad the treatment is over," Veronica said.

Veronica's doctor, Fazil Khan of Stonybrook University Hospital, said Veronica underwent a 20-hour surgery.

"One of the technologies we used is computer navigation to remove the tumor from her pelvis and still save her hip bone," Khan explained.

And on Saturday, Veronica was set to sing at Carnegie Hall with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York.

"There's always a light at the end of the tunnel," she said. "You will get there."

The concert was set for noon Saturday at the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall.
