BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Long Island man is giving the ultimate gift, donating a kidney to his father.

Tyler Furia will turn 21 years old on March 22, but will be undergoing surgery the day before so he can donate a kidney to his father, Frank.

Both men are volunteer firefighters in Bellport.

Frank Furia was diagnosed with kidney failure 15 years ago and undergoes dialysis three times a week.

“It was a shock, you know. I knew that my kidney was failing. They told me when I was diagnosed that the treatment could compromise my organs and such, I would die anyway type of thing,” Frank Furia told WCBS 880. “I opted for the treatment and 15 years later, it was compromised.”

Tyler Furia said he was willing to do whatever it took to help his father’s health.

“I was right on board, I was ready to go do it. I was ready to take all these tests and get everything done to see what I can do and I ended up being a perfect match,” Tyler Furia told WCBS 880. “This is the ultimate volunteering thing you could possibly do, helping out your own family members beyond anything they could possibly do in the fire department.”

The transplant surgery is set for Thursday, March 21, at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

“He’s my hero, basically. He’s going to give me a number more years of my life that we’ll be able to do things,” Frank Furia said of his son.

Both men face an eight-week recovery, according to doctors.
