U.S. Navy To Name Ship After Trenton

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Sen. Frank Lautenberg is praising the Navy for its plans to name a new ship after New Jersey's capital city.

The Navy is expected to announce the plans Thursday afternoon.

The United States Naval Ship Trenton will be a joint high-speed vessel that can be used to support overseas operations, conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and support special operations forces.

The ships have an aviation flight deck and can operate in shallow ports and waterways.

The USNS Trenton is expected to be completed by late 2014.

Lautenberg says it's appropriate to name the ship after Trenton, the site of one of the country's historic military victories in the Revolutionary War.
