Meat Cleaver Killing Jury Trying For Verdict Again As Vigil Continues In Courtroom

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Owen and Michael Faughey, brothers of the late therapist Dr. Kathryn Faughey, and their wives are continuing their courtroom vigil as a jury continues to try and reach a verdict in the case of the man who admitted killing Dr. Faughey.

The jury claimed on Thursday that it had been deadlocked since deliberations began eight days ago, but the judge ordered them to keep working.

The debate is over David Tarloff's mental state, when he burst into Dr. Faughey's Upper East Side medical office intending to rob her colleague, psychiatrist Kent Shinbach.

But first he killed Dr. Faughey with the knives, meat cleaver and mallet he'd packed in a suitcase.

Tarloff said his intent was to get $40,000 to free his mother from a nursing home and take her to Hawaii.

His attorney has argued that his demented plan is proof of insanity. He has been hospitalized 20 times.

The prosecutors say that while Tarloff is mentally ill, he should still be found guilty of murder.

If the jury finds Tarloff is not criminally responsible due to mental illness, it could mean life in a secure psychiatric facility. A murder conviction could put him in prison for life.
