With Mets On The Road Citi Field Transforms Into Obstacle Course For Spartan Race

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Citi Field was transformed into a massive obstacle course on Saturday, when thousands of people crowded the stadium for a rigorous and world-famous competition.

Twenty-thousand competitors from around the Tri-State area came out to take part in the Spartan Race, a three mile long obstacle course that participants called 'rugged' and 'challenging'.

Angela Phillips told CBS 2's Janelle Burrell that she was there to cross the event off of her bucket list.

"It's a race that you don't have to be pretty for, number one. It's rugged, it's challenging," she said.

The race includes a high jump, a stadium stair run with a 30-lbs sand bag, and a spear toss. Competitors who can't complete an obstacle are penalized with a set of thirty burpees.

Racers with relatives serving in Afghanistan were able to share the experience with their loved ones through a live video feed of the event.
