Authorities: Brooklyn Teacher Charged With Raping Student

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a male student, officials said Thursday.

Evelyn Rogers, a 33-year-old teacher at the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media in Brooklyn, was arrested on third degree rape charges, Special Commissioner of Investigation Richard Condon said.

An investigation by the Special Commissioner's office found that Rogers "engaged in sexual intercourse on multiple occasions" with a male student beginning when he was 15, authorities said. The student is now 16.

Fellow teachers at the school expressed disgust and disappointment over the allegations.

"You're supposed to protect the children so when you find someone that deviates from that rule I just think that's awful," one teacher said.

"When I first started teaching we were told that those children in the class are like our biological children and we ought to treat them like that," another teacher said. "Now, do you go to bed with your biological children? No."

Officials said the alleged sexual encounters did not take place on school grounds, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

It's unclear if the student attended the school where Rogers worked.
