From Intensive Care To The Prom, Teen Faced Death Several Times During Battle With Leukemia

GREENWICH, Conn(CBSNewYork) -- A teenage girl who beat cancer and has cheated death several times is getting ready to go to the big dance.

Nicole Graham told CBS 2's Dave Carlin that she doesn't think of herself as anything, but a normal teen girl.

"I love shopping and hanging out, I'm just a normal girl," she said.

This normal 16-year-old, is one tough teenager and she has an incredible survival story to tell.

At the beginning of the school year Nicole was diagnosed with leukemia and suffered several near fatal medical setbacks including a run in with sepsis, two strokes, organ failure, and paralysis.

Nicole went from the ICU to dancing in two months. For most patients that rehab process would have taken at least a year, possibly two.

Graham's story has made her a hero in the eyes of everybody at Blythedale Children's Hospital.

"She would not let anything knock her down, she is amazing," said Senior Physical Therapist, Maureen Carroll, "She's our hero."

Nicole credits her speedy recovery to a strong support network; now the gifted student athlete is back in action leading her lacrosse team as a captain and is getting ready to attend Greenwich High School's junior prom.

"I had so many people supporting me," she said, "being back on the team is crazy."

Nicole's Leukemia is currently in remission.
