Boy, 14, Arrested On Lower East Side After Allegedly Biting Teacher

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday for allegedly biting a teacher who did not give his phone back as quickly as he wanted.

The incident happened at the Lower Manhattan Arts Academy on the Seward Park Educational Campus. The teacher was returning cellphones at the end of a period, but, according to school officials, the student said he was not going to wait and demanded his phone.

The student reportedly bit the teacher's hand, the New York City Department of Education said in a statement.

The teacher's hand became red and swollen, but no skin was broken, the DOE said.

Police took the student to the local precinct, and his parents were notified, the DOE said.

Disciplinary action was pending Tuesday night.
