Officer Accidentally Shoots Self At Long Island Courthouse

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A law enforcement officer accidentally shot himself in the left arm at a Long Island courthouse Monday morning.

The shooting happened around 9:10 a.m. inside the U.S. Courthouse in Central Islip in an area designated for federal and Homeland Security officers, WCBS 880's Mike Xirianchs reported.

U.S. Marshals said the unidentified officer was getting ready for work when his gun accidentally discharged, CBS 2 reported.

According to Suffolk County Police, the man, 67, is employed by Akal Incorporated, a private security company contracted by the U.S. Government.

The man is a court security officer who is also a special deputized marshal, according to police.

He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
